Abstract

A PACKAGED, OIL FIRED STEAM GENERATOR THAT CAN OPERATE WITH UNTREATED WATER WILL BE DEVELOPED. THE GENERATOR WILL BE RATED AT APPROXIMATELY 200,000 Btu/hr AND WILL PRODUCE SATURATED STEAM AT 15 TO 22 psig. IT WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH TYPICAL ACCESSORIES REQUIRED FOR USE IN A MILITARY KITCHEN. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE 2 YEARS TO COMPLETE. DURING PHASE I AS BREADBOARD MODEL WITHOUT ANY ACCESSORIES WAS FABRICATED AND TESTED. THE DESIGN UTILIZED HEAT PIPES AS HEAT TRANSFER ELEMENTS BETWEEN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND A POOL BOILER. SINCE THE COMBUSTION AS WELL AS THE EVAPORATION OCCUR ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE HEAT PIPES, ALL SURFACES THAT ARE SUBJECT TO FOULING ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE FOR CLEANING. TESTING OF THE BREADBOARD DEVICE VERIFIED THE HEAT TRANSFER CAPABILITIES OF THE HEAT PIPES IN THIS ENVIRONMENT AND THE RESISTANCE OF THE BOILER SECTION TO FOULING. PHASE II WILL CONSIST OF THREE MAJOR TASKS. DURING TASK I THE EXISTING BREADBOARD WILL BE EXTENSIVELY TESTED INCLUDING A LONG TIME ENDURANCE RUN TO EVALUATE THE RESISTANCE TO FOULING AND TO ESTABLISH MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. TASK 2 WILL CONSIST OF OPTIMIZING THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER/HEAT PIPE CONFIGURATION TO ACHIEVE THE RATED CAPACITY AT OPTIMUM EFFICIENCY. A COMPLETE PROTOTYPE STEAM GENERATOR WITH ALL ACCESSORIES WILL BE BUILT AND TESTED DURING TASK 3.
