Abstract

UNDER PHASE I FUNDING, WE HAVE INVENTED AN ENTIRELY NEW FORM OF ROBOT VISION SYSTEM WHICH WE CALL ILLUMINATION STEREO. THREE INDEPENNDENT PATENT SEARCHES, AND DISCUSSIONS WITH SEVERAL LEADERS IN THE ROBOT VISION FIELD CONFIRM THAT THE CONCEPT IS NEW. ILLUMINATION STEREO ENABLES RANGE IMAGES TO BE PRODUCED FASTER AND EASIER THAN WITH THE PRIOR ART APPROACHES. WE HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE ANALYTICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EXPECTED ACCURACY, AND HAVE BUILT AN INITIAL PROTOTYPE TO VERIFY OUR ANALYTICAL RESULTS, AND EMPIRICALLY EVALUATE THE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE.
