Abstract

THE PHASE I APPLICATION OF SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY (STM) TO Al IN WATER DEMONSTRATED THAT IMAGING OF THIS SURFACE COULD BE OBTAINED WITH RESOLUTION BETTER THAN 1 NANOMETER. THE GOAL OF THE PHASE II RESEARCH IS TO EXTEND THE PHASE I EFFORT TO INCLUDE IMAGING DURING POTENTIAL AND STRESS CONTROL. DURING PHASE II, STUDIES WILL BE PERFORMED ON Al ALLOYS AND Al METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES.
