Abstract

THE PHASE I PROGRAM DEMONSTRATED THE FEASIBILITY OF THE SLOT CAMERA (ONE-SIDED CT SYSTEM) AND WAS CARRIED OUT WITH AN IMAGE SENSOR THAT CONTAINED LOW EFFICIENCY X-RAY DETECTORS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY DETECTORS, THE SLOT CAMERA CAN MATCH OR EXCEED THE SPATIAL RESOLUTION OBTAINED WITH PRESENT CT SCANNERS FOR A GIVEN AVERAGE BODY DOSE. THE PHASE II PROGRAM PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A LABORATORY PROTOTYPE OF THE SLOT CAMERA WITH (a) HIGH EFFICIENCY X-RAY DETECTORS FOR THE IMAGE SENSOR, (b) AN IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING CT TYPE IMAGE SLICES, AND (c) A MECHANICAL SCAN SYSTEM. WITH THESE FEATURES IT IS EXPECTED THAT FOR AN AVERAGE BODY DOSE OF 5 RADS, THE SLOT CAMERA WILL OBTAIN SPATIAL RESOLUTIONS OF 7 LINE PAIRS PER CM FOR LARGE BODY PARTS SUCH AS THE CHEST OR ABDOMEN, AND IN EXCESS OF 10 LINE PAIRS PER CM OBTAINED WITH PRESENT CT SCANNERS FOR THE SAME AVERAGE BODY DOSE. WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE DEVELOPMENT, CONSTRUCTION, AND TESTING OF THE LABORATORY PROTOTYPE, THE FINAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PHASE II PROGRAM IS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE SLOT CAMERA CAN BE DESIGNED AS PART OF A MULTI-MODE FORMAT WITH THE CAPABILITY OF PROVIDING BOTH CONVENTIONAL RADIOGRAPHIC AND CT TYPE SERVICES AS REQUIRED.
