Abstract

THE CONTINUOUS PROCESSING OF HIGHLY SOLID FILLED EXPLOSIVES LIKE PLASTIC BONDED EXPLOSIVES (PBXs) HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED; HOWEVER, PROCESS AND MATERIAL VARIABLES THAT INFLUENCE PRODUCT QUALITY ARE NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD. THIS PROGRAM PROPOSES TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF CONTINUOUS PROCESSING OF HIGHLY SOLID FILLED EXPLOSIVES AND POINT THE WAY TO NEAR OPTIMAL PROCESSING CONDITIONS AND PROCESS CONTROL TECHNIQUES. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NOVEL STATISTICAL BASED PROCESS SCREENING EXPERIMENTS CALLED DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS (DOEs) AND THE INTRODUCTION OF COMPUTER BASED DATA ACQUISITION AND PROCESS CONTROL TECHNIQUES. SCREENING EXPERIMENTS ARE A POWERFUL STATISTICAL METHOD WHICH YIELD MUCH INFORMATION WITH RELATIVELY FEW EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS. THEIR USE SAVES SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF TIME AND MONEY NEEDED TO REACH STATISTICALLY VALID DIRECTIONS WHEN COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL "VARY ONE AT A TIME" AND FULL FACTORIAL APPROACHES. IN ADDITION, C CATEGORY OF DOEs REFERRED TO AS SIMPLEX WILL BE USED IN FORMULATION OPTIMIZATION EXPERIMENTS. USE OF SIMPLEX EXPERIMENTS WILL ASSIST FORMULATION DEVELOPERS IN UNDERSTANDING AND OPTIMIZING THE PRODUCT-PROCESS INTERPLAY.
