Abstract

PHASE II OF PAD IS TO DESIGN AND BUILD TWO PTOTOTYPE FIELD COMPUTERS AS IDENTIFIED IN THE PHASE I FINAL REPORT. THE FIELD COMPUTER WILL PHYSICALLY LOOK LIKE A LARGE CALCULATOR BUT WILL CONTAIN MUCH THE SAME POWER AND FUNCTIONALITY OF AN IBM-PC COMPUTER. THE FIELD COMPUTER CAN BE USED FOR PAB APPLICATIONS DUE TO ITS LARGE DISPLAY AND PORTABILITY BUT CAN ALSO BE RE-PROGRAMMED FOR OTHER APPLICATIONS. PHASE II DESIGN WILL CONSIST OF TWO MAJOR PARTS: a) HARDWARE DESIGN AND b) SOFTWARE DESIGN. THE HARDWARE DESIGN WILL BE TO REDUCE AN IBMPC TO A FORM FACTOR SIMILAR TO AN AVERAGE TEXTBOOK. THE DESIGN MUST TAKE THE UNIT RUGGED, PORTABLE, EASY TO USE, AND CAPABLE OF VOLUME PRODUCTION. THE SOFTWARE DESIGN WILL BE TO ADAPT MS-DOS TO THE NEW HARDWARE DESIGN SUCH THAT EXISTING MS-DOS APPLICATIONS WILL EXECUTE ON THE NEW HARDWARE WITH LITTLE OR NO CHANGE. APPLICATIONS CAN BE DEVELOPED ON AN IBM-PC OR COMPATIBLE COMPUTER AND LOADED INTO THE FIELD COMPUTER. DATA CAN BE EASILY TRANSFERRED BETWEEN AN IBM-PC AND THE FIELD COMPUTER.
