Abstract

Polymer binders play a key role in the cycle life and abuse tolerance of lithium ion batteries. Binder formulations are highly constrained by electrochemical stability and compatibility with established electrode manufacturing infrastructure and hygiene. This SBIR project develops a new aqueous binder system based on a polymer that supports high lithium ion transport rate and is highly compatible with our proprietary artificial surface electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer used to stabilize and enhance the life of silicon anodes. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: This innovative binder system will enhance the cycle life of high energy lithium ion batteries by & gt;25% over the state of the art, while also reducing the cost of high capacity electrode coating.
