Abstract

We propose to develop a prototype wearable sensor network comprising small form factor tags attached to the soldier s limbs and weapon, and a receiver array worn on the soldier s chest that provides accurate position, velocity and acceleration information that the soldier is being subjected to. Each tag is attached at various locations on the body and incorporates a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) combined with a modulated RF position sensor similar to Doppler radar that provides Direction of Arrival (DOA) and range information from each tag to the body worn receiver array. This hybrid combination provides for a robust solution that corrects the inherent IMU drift, thus providing a highly accurate and robust kinematics measurement and tracking capability. Data is downloaded via a WiFi connection between the receiver array controller and the external remote computer displays the data on a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
