Abstract

To address the Army Medical Research and Material Command s need for closed-loop anesthesia system Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a new Intelligent Sensor for Closed Loop Anesthesia Delivery (iSCAD) system based on a novel optical spectroscopy technique and a multisensor fusion based control algorithm. The key innovation in the iSCAD is its novel system design that allows accurate detection of propofol in blood which does not result in any discomfort to the patient, making it suitable for field environment and hospital use. iSCAD s novel processing of sensor information to generate a measure of depth of anesthesia enables better control of anesthesia delivery resulting in improved therapeutic outcome in terms of reduced pain, faster recovery, and reduced side effects to the warfighter. In Phase I, POC will develop an iSCAD system model, perform analysis and develop a bench-top prototype. We will perform feasibility testing on this TRL 3-4 prototype to evaluate performance metrics such as sensitivity, accuracy and detection limits. In Phase II, we plan to build and validate a complete clinically fieldable, TRL-5 system on an animal model to determine its clinical safety and efficacy as well as evaluate its productization.
