Abstract

Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to advance the development of the Fishing Net Entanglement Avoidance System (FiNEAS) that was developed and proven feasible in Phase I. This self-powered system employs a sonar to locate fishing nets at distances >310 ft and hydrodynamic structure with control surfaces to maneuver the towed array TL-29A around the fishing nets or other obstacles to prevent entanglement and damage. FiNEAS developed to date has a dimension of 190cm x 90cm x 75cm, offers toolless installation onto tow cable; easy retrieval from the water; freedom of pitch and roll; and does not interfere with the SURTASS. Testing of Phase I full-scale basic work model in open waters at a towing speed of 5 knots and 502.5 ft length towed cable demonstrated capability to move >50 ft horizontally to either side in
