Abstract

Environmental site assessment can be made more effective, accurate and efficient through the use of a powerful handheld pen entry table computer augmented with a larger number of additional PC Card slots and additional battery capacity. The additional slots allow cards to be added to capture codes, etc., in real-time and store them in an object oriented data base. The additional slots will also allow the incorporation of wireless communications, and large amounts of storage. In particular, these slots will provide housing for the rapidly growing array of instrumentation becoming available in the PC Card format. In addition, the availability of GPS, video, audio, and communication cards allow the site assessment to be documented in a multi-media fashion. All measurements, annotations, dictation, etc., can be tagged with highly accurate (differential) position and time information. An advanced methodology for the site assessment process will be incorporated into the software. This pen entry forms based system will work in tandem with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide the user with a portable, powerful, user friendly environmental assessment decision tool that will allow site-specific flexibility while maintaining comprehensibility. It will provide RBCA based decision support and will produce high quality multi-media based outputs.
