Abstract

"The US imports over $300 billion dollars of oil every year. Electrification of the US fleet would reduce our dependency on foreign oil and could help curb carbon dioxide emissions through increased renewable energy integration. However, current battery technology is too expensive and offers insufficient range to drive broad market acceptance of electric vehicles. ARPA-E has responded by challenging the US research and development communities to develop new battery chemistries that have energy capacities greater than 400Wh/kg and 600 Wh/L with costs less than $50/kWh.
