Abstract

This proposal describes the second phase development effort for a non-mechanical device capable of steering broadband light to a common location as wuld a rotating mirror (i.e., no beam broadening due to wavelength dspersion). the device uses a liquid crystal writable grating that provides wavelength-independent phase shifts as the active steering medium. In addition to broad band spectral band steering, it offers submillesecond non-sequential agility.In Phase I, a demonstration of the basic concept using visible to near-IR components was performed and a mid-IR implementation was fully investigated.In Phase II, a mid-IR prototype will be fabricated and tested. Phase III will integrate ths technology with thermal imaging systems for military and industrial applications.
