Abstract

During Phase II of the proposed program, Science and Technology Applications, LLC, proposes to prepare novel energetic materials identified during Phase I as potential targets. Therefore, the objectives of the proposed work in Phase II are (i) the development of synthetic methods for the preparation of N3+ salts, (ii) the bulk synthesis of N5- salts, (iii) the direct synthesis of neutral polynitrogens, (iv) the characterization of the N2CN+ cation and its use for the synthesis of novel high-nitrogen cations and carbon nitrides, (v) the stabilization of catenated nitrogens by introducing alternating charges through the selective addition of oxygen atoms, and (vi) the preparation and characterization of novel polyazides. The proposed work would be divided between STA as the small business and the Loker Research Institute of the University of Southern California as the academic institution. Dr. Karl Christe would be the principal investigator for this program, and all the experimental work would be carried out in the USC laboratories. USC has excellent facilities for this type of work.
