Abstract

78405S The efficient, clean, and cost effective conversion of coal remains a principal goal of the U.S. energy industry. Indirect liquefaction of coal via gasification is currently the most effective, though still costly, method of conversion of the raw feedstock syngas for liquid fuel production, hydrogen for fuel cells, or combustion in a gas turbine generator. However, gasifiers usually operate at high temperature and pressure, resulting in materials problems and the need for costly coal feed mechanisms or other mechanisms that reduce overall gasifier efficiency. This project will combine fluidized-bed gasification technology with chemical looping technology, leading to direct partial oxidation of coal for coal gasification. In Phase I, oxygen carriers will be identified; the chemical looping system will be combined with a fluidized bed reactor to produce a single assembly that produces syngas from coal and air feeds; and then the syngas will be shifted to maximize hydrogen production. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The commercialization of advanced coal gasification will help the U.S. reduce its dependence on foreign oil. The technology should provide capital savings by eliminating the air separation unit, thereby significantly reducing plant costs.
