Abstract

75880-This project will develop a novel energy converter for nuclear safeguards applications related to the monitoring of spent nuclear fuels. As a tamper-resistant, internally generated power source for safeguards monitoring, it will enable the use of other mature technologies to be applied for the real-time tracking and monitoring of spent nuclear fuels. In Phase I, the main elements of a new photocatalytic energy converter will be tested and integrated to demonstrate proof-of-concept. The demonstration will allow the performance and reliability of the converter to be evaluated for incorporation into systems for monitoring the status of spent nuclear fuels in dry storage. Further evaluation will determine the converter¿s ability to power a GPS-class tracking device. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The photocatalytic energy converter should have application to the monitoring of dry cask spent nuclear fuel, as well to the monitoring of high-specific-activity radio-isotope sources.
