Abstract

72061S03-I Continued demand for natural gas will require the use of reserves with high carbon dioxide concentrations, yet current technology cannot economically remove this carbon dioxide to yield market quality gas. This project will develop a novel surface adsorption membrane for upgrading this natural gas. Phase I will focus on evaluating selective surface adsorption membranes for removing carbon dioxide from natural gas. The membranes will be fabricated, their performance will be evaluated, and the effect of potential impurities and defouling/cleaning mechanisms will be determined. Ultimately, the technical and economic feasibility of the proposed membrane approach for upgrading natural gas will be determined. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should be directly applicable to upgrading natural gas to pipeline quality. The membrane process should be more economical for removing large concentrations of carbon dioxide than existing processes.
