Abstract

DEVELOPMENT IS PROPOSED OF A LOW-COST SOLAR POWERED REFRIGERATOR AND AIR CONDITIONER OF VERY HIGH RELIABLILITY. IT IS INTENDED FOR APPLICATION IN RURAL AREAS FOR REFRIGERATION AND SPACE AIR CONDITIONING OF HOUSES, ANIMAL SHEDS AND STORAGE AREAS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND PROSPERITY OF RURAL INHABITANTS. THE UNIT IS COMPLETELY SELF CONTAINED AND REQUIRES NO EXTERNAL SERVICES APART FROM MANUAL STARTING. IT OPERATES THROUGHOUT THE DAY IN SUNLIGHT CONDITIONS. THE PROPOSED SYSTEM CONSISTS OF TWO UNITS, A POWER SYSTEM AIR DRIVER AND A REFRIGERATOR. BOTH ARE STIRLING MACHINES FO THE PARTICULAR TYPE KNOWN AS A FLAT PLATE LOW DELTA-T KOLIN STIRLING MACHINE. THE DRIVER RECEIVES SOLAR INPUT INCIDENT UPON A FLAT PLATE NON-CONCENTRATING COLLECTOR WITH SUPPLEMENTARY INPUT FROM A SOLAR REFLECTOR. PART OF THE ENERGY INPUT IS CONVERTED TO WORK TO DRIVE THE KOLIN-STIRLING REFRIGERATOR. AIR IS USED AS THE WORKING FLUID FOR BOTH MACHINES. THE REFRIGERATOR OPERATES ON AN OPEN CYCLE INHALING ATMOSPHERIC AIR AND PRODUCING A STREAM OF COLD CONDITIONED (DRIED) AIR. LIQUID WATER PRECIPITATED FROM THE INCOMING AIR IS EVACUATED FROM THE REFRIGERATOR UNIT AS REQUIRED AND IS A SOURCE OF POTABLE COLD WATER FOR DRINKING PURPOSES.
