Abstract

THE CELLULAR TELEPHONE INDUSTRY HAS GREATLY EXPANDED ITS USER COMMUNITY SINCE ITS INTRODUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY TEN YEARS AGO, AND IT CONTINUES TO DEVELOP RAPIDLY. IT IS AXIOMATIC THAT SYSTEM COSTS, RELIABILITY, AND PERFORMANCE CAN BE IMPROVED THROUGH THE USE OF HIGH BANDWIDTH, HIGHLY INTEGRATED ELECTRONICS. THE CELLULAR CHANNELIZER/EQUALIZER/DETECTOR RESEARCH PROJECT ATTENDS NOT ONLY TO IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES, BUT ALSO POTENTIALLY OPENS NEW CELLULAR TELEPHONE OPPORTUNITIES, SUCH AS ISDN, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, VIDEO, PLUS OTHERS. THE TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS ARE BASED ON DS-CDMA PROTOCOL, A SYNERGISTIC (PATENT-PENDING) ARITHMETIC PROCESSOR DESIGN, AND A HIGHLY INTEGRATED RECEIVER DESIGN. THE DESIGN OF AN EXTREMELY COMPACT, SINGLE-CHIP DS-CDMA RECEIVER WHICH CONTAINS DIGITAL MIXERS, DOWNCONVERTERS, AND ADAPTIVE EQUALIZERS IS DEMONSTRATED. THE TECHNOLOGY IS SUPERIOR TO OTHER ALTERNATIVES IN CELLULAR APPLICATIONS. THE STUDY INVESTIGATES AND COMPARES DS-CDMA RECEIVER DESIGNS AND HOW THEY AFFECT PERFORMANCE/COMPLEXITY TRADE-OFFS. SIMULATION IS USED TO VERIFY DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE CONJECTURES.
