Abstract

THIS PROJECT IS STUDYING THE FEASIBILITY OF USING THE IMPROVED COARSELY PACKED COLUMN FLOTATION FOR FINE COAL CLEANING. THIS NEW CONCEPT HAS DEMONSTRATED TECHNICAL SUCCESS AT VARIOUS MINERAL PROCESSING SECTORS OF THE MINING INDUSTRY. THE NEW FLOTATION SYSTEM ALLOWS SIGNIFICANT INCREASE OF THE THROUGHPUT WITHOUT COMPROMISING MINERAL CONCENTRATION PERFORMANCE. HOWEVER, THE COARSELY PACKED COLUMN HAS NOT BEEN TESTED TO RECOVER COAL FINES IN THE U.S.. THE PHASE I RESEARCH IS A LABORATORY SCALE STUDY TO INVESTIGATE THE PLANNED METHOD FOR COAL CLEANING. IT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE RECOVERY OF PREMIUM COAL FROM SELECTED FEED SAMPLES, INCLUDING ONE FRESHLY GROUND RAW COAL AND ONE FROM A PLANT EFFLUENT. VARIOUS OPERATING VARIABLES ARE BEING INVESTIGATED TO ACHIEVE HIGH YIELD AND MAXIMUM ASH AND PYRITIC SULFUR REMOVAL. THE RESULTS ARE BEING EVALUATED FOR THEIR TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC MERITS, IN COMPARISON WITH STANDARD FLOTATION TESTS.
