Abstract

FERRITIC ALLOYS SHOW PROMISE FOR LIQUID-METAL REAC- TORS. THE MAJOR DISADVANTAGE OF FERRITICS IS THEIR REL- ATIVELY POOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE CREEP STRENGTH. THE COMPANY HAS SHOWN THAT IT CAN OXIDE DISPERSION STRENGTHEN (ODS) A NUMBER OF ALLOYS BY A CASTING PROCESS SO THAT ONE NOT ONLY OBTAINS HIGH STRENGTH AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE BUT ALSO CAN PROCESS THE MATERIAL BY CASTING. CAST ALLOYS CAN BE WELDED WITHOUT LOSS OF DISPERSION UNIFORMITY. THIS PROJECT WILL DETERMINE CONDITIONS THAT CAN PRODUCE WETTING OF COLLOIDAL OXIDES BY MOLTEN FERRITIC ALLOYS AND WILL STUDY THE GROWTH RATE OF OXIDE PARTICLES AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE AND TIME. THE NEW ODS FERRITIC CAST ALLOYS WILL PROVIDE A WAY TO INTRODUCE HIGH-STRENGTH FERRITICS INTO THE COMMERCIAL MARKET FOR USE IN NUCLEAR REACTORS.
