Abstract

THIS INNOVATION IS BASED ON THE MEISSNER EFFECT TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE AND REDUCE THE WEIGHT, SIZE, AND POWER OF SPACECRAFT POWER AND PROPULSION EQUIPMENT BY GREATLY REDUCING MAGNETIC FLUX LEAKAGE IN MOTORS, ACTUATORS AND OTHER ELECTROMAGNETIC DEVICES. IT WILL UTILIZE THE MOST ADVANCED FORM OF HIGH TC SUPERCONDUCTORS- THIN FILMS. THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF PASSIVE FLUX CONTAINMENT, PROVIDE DESIGN DATA, AND TO EVALUATE EXPECTED DEVICE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS. COOPERATIVE EFFORTS WITH NASA ENGINEERS ARE SUGGESTED TO APPLY TECHNIQUES TO HARDWARE OF CURRENT INTEREST SO THAT IMMEDIATE RESULTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM A PHASE II EFFORT.
