Abstract

INFRARED FIBER SYSTEMS, INC WILL DEVELOP NON-CONTACT SENSORS USING INFRARED TRANSMITTING FIBER OPTICS FOR USE IN CONFINED OR INACCESSIBLE LOCATIONS OR HARSH ENVIRONMENTS. THE FIBER WILL BE MADE IN-HOUSE FROM METAL FLUORIDE GLASS. THE TWO SYSTEMS TO BE DEVELOPED ARE: 1. INFRARED FIBER REMOTE SPECTROSCOPY TO DETECT THIN FILMS OF ORGANIC CONTAMINATION ON METAL SURFACES. ALSO USEFUL TO DETECT HAZARDOUS GASES AND OTHER MATERIALS. 2. INFRARED FIBER PYROMETER FOR REMOTE TEMPERATURE SENSING, POTENTIALLY USEFUL IN JET ENGINES. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO STUDY WAYS TO COAT AND STRENGTHEN THE FIBERS FOR USE IN THE FIELD AND IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS. THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING THESE SYSTEMS INTO HIGHLY SENSITIVE AND RUGGEDIZED FIELD VERSIONS WILL BE DETERMINED.
