Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS PHASE I PROPOSAL IS AUTOMATE A SIMPLIFIED PROTOTYPE OF A LOGICAL FILE DESIGN METHODOLOGY. THE METHODOLOGY, DEVELOPED BY THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR, IS BASED ON PROVEN UNDERLYING DATABASE DESIGN PRINCIPALS. OVER80 EMPLOYEES AT MARTIN MARIETTA DATA SYSTEMS HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING IN THIS METHODOLOGY AND HAVE GIVEN IT HIGH MARKS ASA USEFUL DATABASE DESIGN TOOL. THE PROTOTYPE TO BE DEVELOPED WILL PROVIDE HELP FACILITIES TO SUGGEST COMMONALITIES WITH RESPECT TO THE APPLICATION TYPE AS WELL AS PROVIDE SUGGESTIONS FOR ERROR CORRECTION AS INCONSISTENCIES OCCUR DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE PRODUCT RESULTING FROM THIS RESEARCH SHOULD BE A VALUABLE AID TO BOTH PROGRAMMERS AND DATA BASE ADMINISTRATORS (DBA) IN DESIGNING FILES FOR DATABASE ENVIRONMENTS.
