Abstract

IN ORDER TO OPTIMIZE THE APPLICATION OF AEROASSIST CONCEPTS TO MANEUVERING RE-ENTRY VEHICLES, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO HAVE A SCHEME THAT CAN ACCURATELY AND SIMULTANEOUSLY PREDICT THE VEHICLE'S AERODYNAMIC FORCES AND MOMENTS, AS WELL AS THE CORRESPONDING SURFACE HEAT-TRANSFER RATES. PHASE I OF THIS EFFORT IS INTENDED TO DEVELOP A FULLY THREE-DIMENSIONAL NONEQUILIBRIUM PARABOLIZED NAVIER-STOKES SCHEME. THIS SCHEME WILL ACCURATELY PREDICT THE VISCOUS FORCES AND MOMENTS AROUND A LIFTING MANEUVERING-TYPE VEHICLE, AND WILL ALSO ACCURATELY PREDICT THE SURFACE HEAT-TRANSFER EFFECTS BY ACCOUNTING FOR SURFACE CATALYSIS EFFECTS. PHASE II OF THIS EFFORT WILL EXTEND THIS SCHEME TO INCLUDE RADIATION EFFECTS AND COUPLING WITH SIX DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM TRAJECTORY CALCULATIONS.
